This animation shows a full, one year time lapse animation of surface winds from Jan 1, 2017 until Jan 1, 2018.
The data come from NWS's GFS numerical weather model
Blue colors represent slower winds.
Greens and yellows are faster winds.
Streamlines show the direction of the wind in each frame of the animation.
A few things to notice:
1. Look for the trade winds. Can you find the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone?
2. Where are the "Roaring Forties" and why do they occur?
3. What occurs regularly in the North Atlantic / Caribbean / Gulf of Mexico, but very rarely in the South Atlantic? (No occurrences in 2017.)
