Barcelona WR : second edition for the two-handed world race
Imagine two skippers on a boat (IMOCA Open 60), fighting alongside other skippers as they compete in a crazy race of… 46,300 km !
A true round the world, non-stop sailing tour, with the start and finish line in the same place – Barcelona !

The Barcelona World Race 2010 is the second edition of an excitingly mad race that takes place every four years.
The first was held in 2007/08, the third will (logically) take place in 2014.

Absolutely unique the Barcelona World Race is the only round the world yacht race that is double-handed (two co-skippers per boat) in which no external assistance is permitted or there is a penalty.

The race is organized by the Fundació Navegació Oceànica in Barcelona, and starts on 31st December 2010 at 13 h just in front of the Hotel W in the port of Barcelona.
The arrival is estimated for the end of March 2011!
The route
The departure and arrival will be in Barcelona with three different points of passage at the three Capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin, Horn) and the Cook Strait.
The approximate length of the course is 25,000 nautical miles or for non-sailing minds, 46,300 km !
The teams
Once again this year the best skippers in the world will line up at the start for the Barcelona World Race.
There are 15 teams registered, 6 more than in 2007 that proves just how successful the race has become :

A female explorer discovered on the high seas

Jeanne Baret didn't set out to be the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.
When she stepped onboard the Etoile in 1766, she was looking for plants.
Her lover, Philibert Commerson, was a well-known botanist at the time and had been selected to be part of French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville's round-the-world expedition from 1766-69.
Glynis Ridley, author of The Discovery of Jeanne Baret: A Story of Science, the High Seas, and the First Woman to Circumnavigate the Globe, says Baret would have been the obvious choice to serve as Commerson's assistant on the Etoile's journey, except for one thing.
"A French Royal ordinance forbade women being on French Navy ships," Ridley tells Weekend All Things Considered host Guy Raz. A little theater was necessary.
"The couple formulated a plan for Baret to disguise herself as a young man [and] offer herself as his assistant on the dockside."
A Brutal Discovery
After Commerson "accepted" Baret into his service, the couple was able to keep their secret from the crew of over 100 men for some time.
Baret's real identity was cruelly revealed, however.
The commander of the expedition claims it happened when the Etoile landed on the island of Tahiti.
"Bougainville said that a group of Tahitian men surrounded Baret and immediately identified her as a woman," Ridley says.
"Because she was worried about what might happen, she supposedly revealed her true identity so that her countrymen, the French, could save her from what she took to be an imminent sexual assault."
But after poring over the diaries of crew members, Ridley doesn't believe Bougainville's tale.
"That story is peculiar to Bougainville's journal," Ridley says.
"In fact, three other members of the crew contradict this story and say that Baret was, in fact, brutally exposed."
According to the other journals, Baret was discovered and gang-raped by her crewmates in Papua New Guinea.
The Plant That Carried Her Name
Baret very likely discovered many plants on the expedition, Ridley says, most notably the bougainvillea plant, named for the Etoile's commander.
The plant named after Baret, however, has since shed her name.
Commerson identified the plant while botanizing with Baret in Madagascar and named the genus Baretia.
"The thing about Baretia is that an individual plant may contain a contradictory set of leaves," Ridley says. "Some are oblong, some are rather more square, and some are fairly irregular."
"[Commerson] thought that this was a nice summation of Baret herself, since she united a lot of opposites," Ridley says. In addition to being a woman wearing man's clothes, "she was a working-class woman who traveled ... further than any aristocrat."
If you look up the genus Baretia today, however, you won't find much.
The genus has been reclassified under the name Turraea.
Ridley hopes her book might bring Baret's name back from the past.
"It would be wonderful if, as a result of the book, somebody wants to name something after Baret again," she says. "I think that would be a nice tribute."

The original Six Summits Project was to be realized by bringing a rowing boat to shore on different continents, climb the tallest peak there, and row to the next.
All would be self-propelled meaning that Erden Eruc would be the one propelling any means of transportation.
Halfway out, Erden realized that his quest would not live up to his rules.
What would you do? For Erden, it was back to square one.
This time, he would instead bicycle across the continents and row the oceans in between.
He could stop on each leg and go home for a while, but would have to return to the exact spot where he had left off - down to the very yard of it.
Erden's second life
Erden's second quest for a human powered circumnavigation kicked off north of San Francisco in July 2007, and this is what led to his beaching on Madagascar last month, after 137 solo rowing days.
While on the Mascarene Basin he had crossed the meridian circle of his start at Bodega Bay -- a symbolic halfway point.
ExplorersWeb's awards don't usually go to explorers in the midst of their challenge.
Erden's case has called for an exception twice, due to specific parts that broke a number of records all in themselves.
Except for castaways, few people have it in them to leave Australia in a small rowing boat and head out in to the vast Indian Ocean.
For Erden, it was just another day at the office.
After all, he had already spent 312 days to row 9500 nautical miles non-stop across the Pacific. Only Jim Shekhdar had rowed longer there (10600 NM) and together with Peter Bird's 8700 NM, no one has been close to such distances on the Pacific before or since.
The Pacific row rendered Erden a 2008 ExWeb Award.
In the middle of nowhere, Erden's small boat was slowly transforming into a Noah's Ark.
Birds hung out in the crammed spaces, a faithful flock of fish trailed the boat.
In Erden's live pictures for the first time; not only his, but also Bird's and Shekhdar's Pacific fates, came alive.
After the Pacific, Erden Eruc crossed Papua New Guinea on foot and in a kayak.
A sea kayak carried him to Cooktown, in Australia, from where Erden bicycled 7,780km to Perth. En route he summited Mt Kosciusko on April 10.
Now Erden was ready for his next stage on the Indian Ocean.
This time, another crux lay ahead: Pirates.
Low profile to Africa
"A few articles suggested that I had turned off my tracking beacon during my crossing, which is untrue," Erden told ExplorersWeb, and continued:
"During the crossing near Nazareth Bank short of 060E longitude, when I received the word that a fishing vessel had been hijacked near Ile Tromelin east of Madagascar on the Mascarene Basin, I asked the Ocean Rowing Society to freeze my public tracking page, and also I stopped posting my dispatch locations."
"The beacon was never turned off. The tracking was instead resumed on a private page by the ORS which was made available to my team, to my sponsors and to Tom Sjogren (HumanEdgeTech). This was a precaution against the threat of piracy to maintain a low profile."
Promises to the wife
Somali pirates were not responsible for Erden's final beaching; the cyclone season was.
The Indian Ocean is infamous for its relentless storms and it was one such that made Erden abort his final and nail-biting fight to achieve the first solo row from mainland Australia to mainland Africa.
Following an astonishing 137 days out at sea non-stop, on November 26 Erden hauled his rowing boat up on the island of Madagascar.
Erden is now second only to Peter Bird to have spent the longest time out at sea in a rowing boat (Bird spent 937 days and died on the voyage).
He is the first to row three oceans solo, and his latest row is by far the longest row yet over the Indian Ocean.
Erden plans to continue his row as soon as the storm season is over.
Through his rowing, mountain climbing and biking, Erden Eruc intends to eventually make his way back to San Francisco.
In his last dispatch on November 21, Erden renewed the three promises he had made to Nancy when his circumnavigation began:
"I will not die,
We will not go bankrupt, and
I will not lose you."
Erden's voyage stays with us for the courage, determination, self reliance, and idealism it brought to the Spirit of Adventure in 2010.

Strong La Niña in December 2010

Peruvian fisherman named El Niño (Spanish for “the boy child”) after the Christ child because the climate phenomenon usually shows up around Christmastime.
But its counterpart, La Niña, is the gift giver, bringing cold, nutrient-rich water to the equatorial Pacific off South America.
Those nutrients are a boon to marine life, supporting a larger fish population and increasing the fishermen's catch.
Fishermen might expect a good year ahead, as a strong La Niña is now dominating the Pacific Ocean.
“This is one of the strongest La Niña events in the past half century, and will likely persist into the northern hemisphere summer,” says Bill Patzert, an oceanographer and climatologist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
“Climatic impacts include heavy rains and flooding, which has damaged crops and flooded mines in Australia and Asia. It also has resulted in flooding in northern South America and drought conditions in Argentina. This powerful little lady is spreading her curses and blessings across the planet. She’s the real deal.”
La Niña’s cold water signal is strong in the top two images.
The left image shows ocean surface temperatures on December 15, 2010, as measured by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) on NASA’s Aqua satellite.
In December 2010, sea surface temperatures were colder than average across the equatorial Pacific.
The right image depicts the heat content of the ocean surface between December 14 and 16, 2010, as observed by the U.S.-French Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OSTM)/Jason-2 satellite.
Water expands as it warms, so warmer water has a higher surface elevation than cooler water.
The blue valley streaking across the middle of the sea surface height image is the signature of La Niña.
The intensity of the cold water and the depth and extent of the valley point to an intense event.
Like El Niño, La Niña comes from changes in both the ocean and the atmosphere.
High pressure usually dominates the atmosphere over the eastern Pacific, while low pressure tends to reign in the west.
The pressure difference creates the trade winds, which blow surface water across the equatorial Pacific to a pool of warm water in the west.
Cooler deep water wells up to replace the surface water.
During La Niña events, the pressure difference and the resulting trade winds are stronger.
The more intense winds push more water west, where it builds up north of Australia. Meanwhile, more cold water wells up in the central and eastern Pacific.
La Niña occurs only when both the ocean and the atmosphere change together, and in 2010, they have, says oceanographer David Adamec of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
The unusual ocean temperatures and imbalance in air pressures alter weather patterns across the world.

“Weather effects are strong in the western Pacific,” says Adamec.
“Australia is flooding in many areas.” La Niña rainfall patterns are also evident in the stark horseshoe-shaped region of unusually dry weather in the central Pacific.
La Niña typically affects weather patterns in North America beginning in January.
“For ‘normal’ effects in the U.S., look for cold in the Upper Plains, dry and warm weather in California, dry weather in the southeast, especially Florida, and unusually soggy weather in the Northwest,“ says Adamec.
Because such a wide swath of the Pacific is cold, La Niña tends to keep a lid on global temperatures.
2010, however, was still shaping up to be the hottest year on record in spite of La Niña, according to scientists from NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

Explanation: a roll cloud
What kind of cloud is this?
These rare long clouds may form near advancing cold fronts.
In particular, a downdraft from an advancing storm front can cause moist warm air to rise, cool below its dew point, and so form a cloud.
When this happens uniformly along an extended front, a roll cloud may form.
Roll clouds may actually have air circulating along the long horizontal axis of the cloud.
A roll cloud is not thought to be able to morph into a tornado.
Unlike a similar shelf cloud, a roll cloud, a type of Arcus cloud, is completely detached from their parent cumulonimbus cloud.

Sailing across the years

Syd Fischer is not the only 83-year-old with a stake in a yacht in the Rolex Sydney Hobart race this year.
Bob Oatley, the wealthy octogenarian winemaker, remains owner of Wild Oats XI, the maxi that has won line honors four times.
But Fischer is certainly the only 83-year-old who will be sailing on his (or any) yacht during the potentially wild ride to Hobart starting Sunday.
Although he is not the oldest man to sail in the race — John Walker was 86 when he took part in 2008 — this will be Fischer’s 42nd appearance in one of the world’s premier ocean races, and, through the decades and the occasional disaster, he has become a symbol of Australian sailing and perseverance.
“As I always say, it’s something to do between Christmas and New Year,” Fischer said by telephone this week from Sydney.
“What else do you do? Sit around and watch television?”
For Fischer, this is a rhetorical question.
For others his age, it is — quite reasonably — not.
“He just never stops,” said his close friend Tony Ellis, who will be sailing in his 38th Sydney Hobart with Fischer this week. (see Sydney-Hobart website)
“He’s always saying, ‘Try this or try that. Have you had a think about this?’ He’s really just a big motivator, just making sure he keeps blokes on their toes all the time. And the big problem we have with him is to get him to go down and have a sleep every now and again, because he is getting on a bit. He can tend to overdo it a bit.”
Fischer, a Sydney property developer, has been pushing himself and his crews in the race the Australians call “the Hobart” for nearly 50 years.
Asked to recall his first one, he could not remember whether it was in 1962 or 1963. (It was 1962.) But he could certainly recall what happened one morning in that race as they were sailing down the Tasmanian coast through the fog in the yacht Malohi after the previous owner, who was on board, had tried unsuccessfully to convince the navigator that they were sailing into a dangerous area called the Hippolyte Rocks.
“He finally said, ‘Look I’m going to go and lie on the bow, because I reckon we’re heading for them,”’ Fischer said. “And blow me down, about 20 minutes later, he yelled out, ‘Rocks ahead! Rocks ahead!’
And out of the mist came the bloody great rocks sticking out of the water.
We had a spinnaker on, so we just shoved the boat around and got out of there, and we had seagulls flying in and out of the rigging and everything.”
Fischer is chuckling, but he knows too well that not all Sydney-Hobart stories have happy endings.
In 1998, a severe storm caused the death of six sailors, among them Jim Lawler, a friend of Fischer.
Fischer, Ellis and their crew — which included a future America’s Cup helmsman, James Spithill — escaped harm.
“A lot of the people who got into real strife were the ones who turned around and tried to come back,” Fischer said. “It was coming from the south, and they were going north and so they stayed in the storm. We sailed straight through it and out to the other side, thank God, and we got knocked around a bit but at least we got into calm water.”
Fischer’s yacht finished third that year and he says now that he never considered calling it a career.
“We knew what went wrong, or at least we thought we did,” he said. “So I saw no reason to stop.”
Fischer fell for sailing when he discovered that it put him in contact with the same big waves and tough-minded, team-minded competitors that were part of the Australian surf-lifesaving events in which he excelled as a Sydney teenager.
After racing in Malohi, Fischer had his own yacht built in the 1960s.
He settled on the name Ragamuffin, in honor of some Australian women who formed a hospital-volunteer committee called Ragamuffin that sometimes used one of Fischer’s penthouses for meetings and other functions.
He still calls his yachts Ragamuffin even though his current carbon-fiber TP-52 bears little resemblance to the timber original.
Fischer won Sydney-Hobart line honors in 1988 and 1990 and won the overall handicap in 1992. He also won the 1971 Fastnet race, has sailed in eight Admiral’s Cups and mounted five America’s Cup challenger campaigns, most recently in 2000.
“In Australia you can’t raise money for the America’s Cup, because when Alan Bond won and then went broke and a lot of small people lost their money in his company, I think it turned sponsors off,” Fischer said, referring to the Australian businessman who won the Cup in 1983.
Fischer said he sold off his existing Sydney hotels and most other property in 2008, because he had sensed trouble: “When you see more and more cranes on the horizon in the city, get out.”
He has not retired, however, and continues to go to the office in Sydney on weekday mornings, awaiting a better business climate and maintaining his physical condition with the help of a personal trainer.
“I just keep at it,” he said. “I think as you get older, it’s the edict, ‘If you don’t use it, you lose it.”’
But Fischer has no illusions about his longevity as he heads back out to sea on a slippery deck while others in his peer group, like Oatley, watch from shore or the spectator fleet.
“It’s the old story,” he said. “You’re a rooster one day and a feather duster the next. That’s it. You never know.”

Malaspina 2010, the biggest ever expedition on global change, sets sail

The first of the ships sailing on the Malaspina 2010 expedition, the Hespérides, will set out from Cádiz on Tuesday 15th November.
The expedition is a multidisciplinary project led by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) which aims to gauge the impact of global change on the ocean and study its biodiversity.
The send off, which will take place at 11 a.m. on the east quay of the Port of Cádiz, will be attended by the Minister for Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia, and the Minister of Defence, Carme Chacón.
The event will also be attended by the president of the CSIC, CSIC, Rafael Rodrigo, the project coordinator and CSIC researcher, Carlos Duarte, the captain of the Hespérides, Juan Antonio Aguilar, and the president of the Fundación Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, Francisco González.
"This expedition will not only circumnavigate the globe, but also breathe new life into Spanish oceanography by combining efforts and generating a new culture of cooperation."
It is an ambitious project on a global scale, which aims to meet two important needs: to assess the impact of global change on the ocean and explore the as yet unknown ecosystem of the deep ocean," Duarte highlighted.
The Hespérides will be joined in January next year by the Sarmiento de Gamboa.
Together they will spend a cumulative total of around 9 months at sea and cover some 33,000 nautical miles (one nautical mile is equal to just over 1.8 kilometres).
The lion's share of this distance will be covered by the Hespérides, which will sail a route from Cádiz, taking in Río de Janeiro, Cape Town, Perth, Sidney, Auckland, Honolulu, Panamá and Cartagena de Indias, ending next July in Cartagena (Spain).
For its part, the Sarmiento de Gamboa will cross the Atlantic from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Santo Domingo.
During their stopovers in port, the two ships will be running a series of lectures and other events to raise awareness about the effects of global change, highlight the importance of marine research, and describe the Malaspina expedition.
In total, over 250 researchers from 19 Spanish institutions will be taking part in the project.
This figure rises to almost 400 if we include the students and researchers at the 16 associated foreign institutions, which include the NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Universities of California, Río de Janeiro, Washington and Vienna.
The expedition is being run as a project under the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 programme, which is funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
It involves 27 research groups from the CSIC, the Instituto Español de Oceanografía, 16 Spanish universities, a museum, a public research foundation and the Spanish Navy.
The funding, which is being provided by the CSIC, the Spanish Navy and the Fundación BBVA, along with a number of Spanish universities and regional governments, comes to a total of around 6 million euros.
Multidisciplinary scientific study
The scientific goal of the expedition is to conduct a multidisciplinary study evaluating the impact of global change and exploring the biodiversity of the deep ocean.
This will involve measuring temperature, salinity and nutrient concentration in the various different ocean regions, studying the exchange of gases between the ocean and the atmosphere, and determining the fate of CO2 absorbed by the sea, and the influence of chemical substances on the ocean and their possible toxicity.
The expedition will also explore the diversity and metabolism of phytoplankton and zooplankton and the micro-organisms of the sea's depths.
The team will perform tests at 350 points and collect over 70,000 samples of air, water and plankton everywhere from the surface down to depths of 5,000 metres.
One of the milestones of the project is the launch of 19 Argo buoys which will measure the ocean's temperature and salinity, in 10-day cycles, from the surface down to a depth of 2000 metres, many of them in zones that have never been monitored.
A further 20 buoys will be launched, designed specifically for the project, which will measure the salinity at a depth of 50 centimetres and send the data via the SMOS satellite.
This will enable the first satellite map of marine salinity to be charted, through a collaboration between the Malaspina project and the European Space Agency.
The project also involved the design and patenting of an innovative new oceanographic sample bottle that enables marine plankton samples to be taken at depths of down to 4,000 metres.
The bottle can be fitted in the usual CTD or frame structure in which oceanographic sample bottles are held.
The samples taken will go to make up the Malaspina 2010 Collection, which will also include information and images describing the progress of the expedition.
A set of samples will be sealed and stored for several decades as a time capsule awaiting new scientific developments and so as to bequeath future generations an extensive collection of material for research and for use in developing new techniques.
The project also aims to stimulate marine sciences in Spain and to encourage young people to take up a career in science.
Indeed, over 50 young people will be completing their postgraduate studies, embarking on a section of the survey in order to collect information for their masters' dissertation or doctoral thesis through the Programa de Doctorado Expedición Malaspina Fundación BBVA-CSIC programme, jointly funded by the two institutions.
Alejandro Malaspina: from hero to traitor
The expedition, of which the full name is Expedición de Circunnavegación Malaspina 2010: Cambio Global y Exploración de la Biodiversidad del Océano Global (Malaspina Circumnavegation Expedition 2010: Global Change and Exploration of the Biodiversity of the World's Oceans) has been named after the sailor Alejandro Malaspina (Mulazzo, 1754 – Pontremoli, 1810), a frigate captain in the Spanish Navy, who died 200 years ago this year.
In July 1789, Malaspina led the frigates the Descubierta and the Atrevida on the first Spanish circumnavigation expedition.
During the voyage, which lasted five years, researchers collected data, charted territories, recorded fauna and explored the sea.
After the expedition Malaspina was promoted, but later accused of conspiracy, and finally imprisoned and then exiled, resulting in his expedition's being forgotten until the late 20th century.
The project being led by the CSIC aims, 200 years after the explorer's death, to restore to Malaspina's pioneering expedition the prominence it deserves.

The first of the ships sailing on the Malaspina 2010 expedition, the Hespérides, will set out from Cádiz on Tuesday 15th November.

Goce gravity mission traces ocean circulation

The great sweep of water around Planet Earth has been captured from space in greater detail than ever before.
New observations from Europe's Goce gravity mapping satellite have allowed scientists to plot ocean currents with unprecedented precision.
Understanding gravity is fundamental to being able to track the direction and speed of water across the globe.
The data should improve the climate models which need to represent better how oceans move heat around the planet.
Very strongly represented in the new map is the famous Gulf Stream, the most intense of all the currents where water zips along at velocities greater than one metre per second in places.
"The Gulf Stream takes warm water from the tropics and transports it to higher latitudes, and that warmth is released to the atmosphere and keeps the British Isles, for instance, much warmer than they would otherwise be," said Dr Rory Bingham from Newcastle University, UK.
"When this water has reached higher latitudes, still, because it is by then cold, salty and dense, it will sink; and you get this overturning circulation that helps regulate Earth's climate," he told BBC News.
Dr Bingham presented his ocean circulation data using the latest information from Goce at the recent American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the largest annual gathering of Earth and planetary scientists.
The European Space Agency (Esa) satellite was launched in March 2009, and is delivering a step change in our vision of how gravity varies across the globe.
Contrary to popular perception, the pull of gravity is not the same everywhere.
There are actually very subtle differences in the tug exerted by the mass of the planet from one place to the next.
In the oceans, this has the effect of making water bulge over great submarine mountain ranges and to dip over the deepest ocean trenches.
Goce, which circles the Earth from pole to pole, carries a state of the art gradiometer to sense the variations on a scale better than 100km.
The information is critical to oceanographers attempting to trace the currents.
If they compare the gravity information with measurements of sea surface height made by other spacecraft, they can establish a much better picture of where water is piled up and where it is likely to flow and at what speed.
Very accurate data on currents is already obtained from drifting sensors thrown into the water, but these are necessarily just point measurements.
Oceanographers would hope therefore to combine the truly global perspective they can only get from Goce and other satellites with the "ground truth" they can retrieve from drifters.
Add in further data collected about sea temperature and it becomes possible to calculate the amount of energy the oceans are moving around Earth's climate system.
Computer models that try to forecast future climate behaviour have to incorporate these details if they are to improve their simulation performance.
"The new information coming from Goce is amazing," said Dr Bingham.
"We're getting down to very fine scales now. It's incredible to think for example that we can sense from space very small circulation features like the Mann Eddy, a persistent pocket of water in the Atlantic that just goes around and around."
The ocean circulation information presented at AGU was built using just two months of Goce gravity data.
Scientists expect to construct improved maps when they understand better how the satellite's sophisticated instrument behaves and the observations accumulate.
Goce is not expected to be a long-lived mission.
Flying at an altitude of just 255km - the lowest orbit of any research satellite in operation today - it experiences significant drag from the atmosphere.
This has to be counteracted by constantly throttling an ion thruster on the back of the satellite.
When the fuel for the thruster runs out, however, Goce will fall from the sky.
"We have the funding and resources on board to go until at least the end of 2012," said Dr Rune Floberghagen, Esa's Goce mission manager.
If European governments then provide additional money and Goce can be frugal with its fuel reserves, the end date could move out to 2014.
Goce is an acronym for Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer.
It is part of a series of missions that aim to do innovative science in obtaining data on issues of pressing environmental concern.

Over the past 12 months, the events have included conventional long course ‘windward/leeward’ fleet racing, coastal courses, the short course 15-minute close-combat ‘stadium’ races, one against one speed duels, and now since February this year, as a regular feature, match racing.
The circuit has been focused on commercially run teams since its inception, and will continue to develop the return on investment for the team sponsors – by both controlling costs (budgets remain in the tens of thousands per market), and visiting more markets to extend the global reach of the event.
The 2011 Extreme Sailing Series™ will see an eight event global circuit across Europe, the USA, the Far East and the GCC region.
After being approached by more than 60 host venues from around the world in the past six months, there is a current shortlist of 18 for the 2011 circuit, with 2012 discussions also well progressed.
The 2010 host venues of Trapani (Italy) and Andalucia (Spain) are already confirmed as part of their multi-year contracts, and OC Events will announce the other venues during October and November.
A ‘typical’ 2011 event will consist of five days of racing, as opposed to three last year.
The first two days being ’open water’ courses, where the venue permits, before the action heats up in the close-quarters ‘stadium’ racing over the final three days.
“We are looking to expand and improve the Extreme Sailing Series™ on all fronts,” said Mark Turner, Chairman of the newly merged OC ThirdPole outdoor events group that owns the circuit organiser, OC Events.
“With multi-format competition at top class venues of different types - city centres, ocean facing, rivers and lakes, top class race management and on-water umpiring, development of the outstanding B2B VIP experience that has been at the heart of the event since the beginning, and a bigger than ever entertainment package for spectators on the water and on shore including our Sailing Rocks™ gigs, the Extreme Sailing Series™ will be going up a level.
We have plans in place to expand the TV production and distribution, growing both the news service and the successful worldwide TV series, as well as the online content.
We plan to expand the presence of other classes as warm-up acts, to both race and show-off, like the Moth dinghies and windsurfers this year.”
With strong demand, and a 11-boat limit in place for 2011, a Preliminary Notice of Race is published today with a pre-entry procedure.
Whilst there is an encouraging amount of new team potential, existing teams that have helped grow the circuit will be given priority should the limit be reached.
Other evolutions in the rules are expected to ensure that the team budgets remain under tight control, in the value-for-money commercially funded circuit.

A total eclipse of the Moon occurs during the early morning hours of December 21, 2010 (for observers in western North America and Hawaii, the eclipse actually begins on the evening of December 20).
The entire event is visible from North America, Greenland and Iceland.
Western Europe will see the beginning stages of the eclipse before moonset while western Asia will get the later stages after moonrise.
During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance from bright orange to blood red and more rarely dark brown to very dark gray.
One of the great things about lunar eclipses is that they are completely safe to view with the naked eye.
No special filters are required to protect your eyes like those used for solar eclipses.
You don't even need a telescope to watch the eclipse although a good pair of binoculars will help.
An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow.
The shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other.
The outer shadow or penumbra is a zone where Earth blocks some (but not all) of the Sun's rays. In contrast, the inner shadow or umbra is a region where Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.
One is reminded that Christopher Columbus got out of some difficulty with Native Americans when, knowing that a lunar eclipse was coming, threatened to take the moon away.
Then only part of the Moon passes through the umbra, a partial eclipse is seen.
If the entire Moon passes through the umbral shadow, then a total eclipse of the Moon occurs.
It is also possible to have an eclipse where the Moon passes through only the penumbra.

It was undertaken by scientists from the USA National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the Indonesian Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology.
“Telepresence” was used to send data in real time to scientists who stood watch at Exploration Command Centers in Jakarta and Seattle.
This same technology brought the excitement of the expedition to visitors at the Exploratorium in San Francisco as well.
Little Hercules, a remotely operated exploration vehicle, descended 6000 feet under the sea to capture images and videos of exciting sights like hydrothermal vents and creatures like the deep sea octopus seen below:
Mapping and discovery data from expeditions like this will help all organizations involved better understand ocean resources and how to protect them.
More information about the still mysterious ocean will ultimately further economic and environmental initiatives such as the management of sustainable fisheries, the conservation of the marine environment and the preservation of fragile corals.

Ocean science giant Alvin set for upgrade

Few research tools in the history of science can match the achievements of Alvin, the US manned deep-submersible.
It was this 46-year-old vessel which discovered the hot volcanic vents on the ocean floor that transformed ideas about where and how life could exist.
The sub is also famed for finding an H-bomb lost at sea and for making one of the first surveys of the Titanic.
But this veteran of the abyss has been withdrawn from service this week as it gets ready for a major re-fit.
Alvin is to undergo a two-phase, $40m (£26m) upgrade that will allow it eventually to stay down longer and to go deeper - much deeper than its current 4,500m (14,800ft) limit.
"Going to 4,500m means we can dive in about 68% of the ocean," explained Susan Humphris from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).
"When we go to 6,500m, we will have access to 98% of the ocean. That will make a huge difference; there is so much more to see down there," she told BBC News.
Dr Humphris has been speaking here in San Francisco at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the world's largest annual gathering of Earth and planetary scientists.

Since then it has carried some 1,400 people on more than 4,500 dives.
The vessel undergoes a big service every few years, but the latest will be its most significant to date.
The key upgrade in the National Science Foundation-funded work will be the integration of a new $10m titanium personnel sphere - the "cockpit" in which the pilot and two research passengers sit.
Forged from giant ingots weighing 15.5 tonnes, this protective ball is 16.2cm (6.4in) larger in diameter than Alvin's current sphere.
Its walls are thicker, too, to cope with the greater pressures at 6,500m.

The new sphere will have five viewports instead of the existing three.
These windows will provide larger and overlapping views, which will give researchers a much better idea of what is happening outside the sub.
The WHOI has brought a mock-up of the new sphere to the meeting to show the community what the finished cockpit will be like.
The upgrade will start in January.

Other improvements in the first phase will include a new floatation foam, a new command-and-control system, better lighting and cameras, increased data-logging capabilities, and better interfaces with science instruments.
Not all its components will be changed in the first-phase re-fit, however, and it is only when all the sub's critical elements have been upgraded, including installing lithium-ion batteries for enhanced power, that Alvin will be permitted to go to 6,500m.
That could be in 2015.
"People don't realise that in many ways it's a lot more difficult taking people to the bottom of the ocean than out into space," explained Dr Humphris.
"When you go into space, you're going from one atmosphere of pressure to zero; when going to the bottom of the ocean, you're going from one atmosphere to 650 atmospheres. Alvin is our space shuttle, if you like."
The vessel is a research workhorse.
Its final dive before the refit occurred on Tuesday when it went down into the Gulf of Mexico to inspect corals, to see how they might have been affected by the recent Deepwater Horizon oil well blowout.
Its greatest contribution to science, however, is unquestionably its discovery in 1977 of a system of hydrothermal vents off the Galapagos Islands.

Before its crew saw the vents' extraordinary array of animals thriving in the mineral-rich, hot waters gushing from cracks in volcanic rock, everyone assumed all the deepest places in the oceans would be like deserts - there would be no life.
Today, we know different, and at this year's AGU meeting, UK scientists have been presenting their discovery of vents at 5,000m, the deepest yet observed.
This system was found in waters at a location known as the Mid-Cayman Rise just south of Cuba. It was explored by robotic vehicles; the Rise is beyond the current capabilities of the manned Alvin.
But one of the discoverers, Dr Bramley Murton from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), knows Alvin from a dive he made in the vehicle 10 years ago, and said it would be "phenomenal" to take the upgraded sub to see the new the Mid-Cayman Rise system "face to face".
"These places are extraordinary," he told BBC News.
"You see sights you can barely imagine - rocks covered in bacteria that fluoresce purple, green and blue, and very strange animals. It's a different world down there."
Dr Humphris said Alvin scientists often get asked - as astronauts do - to defend the value of sending people to risky places when robots could do much of this work.
"My answer to that is simple," she said.
"Watch a video of the Grand Canyon and then go there yourself; then you'll realise why we go to the bottom of the ocean with human-operated vehicles. It is this question of having an eye and brain actually looking in 3D at something. I think your whole perspective changes."
"There's a big difference between looking at something on a flat-screen TV and then going down and being there, and being able to see things within their environmental context."
Peter Girguis has no doubts about the need for a human-operated vehicle.
The Harvard University researcher is chair of the deep-submergence science committee.
He told reporters here: "Eighty percent of our biosphere - that is 80% of the portion of our planet that is habitable by life - is deep ocean, deeper than 1,000m.
"Everything that we typically think of, the continents and all that, is a minority.
And Alvin has been enabling us to study about two-thirds of that for many years now.
The Alvin upgrade promises to enable us to have a better capacity to go to deeper depths to study processes that we know are all interconnected.
"Our climate, the health of our ecosystems, the sustainability of our fisheries - all depend on processes that take place in the deep ocean."
